Obsessions - cartooning

Needless to say, I am a huge fan of The New Yorker cartoons in general, and Roz Chast in particular. She sets a high bar for hilarious, neurotic-themed cartooning, and I am ever aiming to reach that bar.

Incidentally, last night I dreamed that I was in a yoga-dance class with Joe Flaherty and Martin Short, the famous comedic actors from SCTV, among other things. I dreamt that I interrupted the class by telling these guys how much I adored their SCTV work, how much it shaped and influenced me as I was growing up, and then I acted out a favourite scene of the two of them in an old, "Vic Arpeggio" skit. They were very gracious and thanked me, but the rest of the class was quite annoyed with me. Dreams!

If anyone reading this remembers that old Vic Arpeggio sketch, or even knows how to find it on the interwebs, please comment below or somehow let me know!

Surprise vacation

This is one for the locals. They will understand completely.

Hey friends, little announcement here. I've been churning out these comics at a rate at which I have been able to post daily for over a year now. I'm going to have to slow down for at least a little while. It's all good though - I have a solo art show this August and a group show in November, and I'm busy getting lots of fun stuff done. I'll be posting updates of the works for these shows on my Twitter and Instagram accounts, so if you have an interest, follow me at @diarysquirrel and @diaryofasquirrel respectively. In the meantime, tune in here Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for Squirrel comics.

And, as always, if you're reading this, thank you for your patronage!

Squirrels fabulously doodled - a guest comic by Peter Rasmussen

Hey look - another guest comic!

This one, perfectly melding the spirits of both comics into one, is by Peter Rasmussen. He does the fabulous and poignant webcomic with the unfortunately inaccurate title of, "Fatherhood Badly Doodled". I tweeted him a while ago that he's going to need to change the name to "Fatherhood Fabulously Doodled" with his art skills, yet the name persists.

He even doodles squirrels fabulously, and we all know how hard that is! (It's also hard to pronounce - in every language - but that's another story.)

So go check out Peter's comic here, and enjoy a little squirrel-fatherhood mashup below, courtesy of our good pal and comic comrade. Thanks, Peter!

Airport neurosis

I don't know, maybe the four hours of Girls episodes I watched on the first leg of my trip has had an effect on my posting today...

This could be the finale, I think I board soon.

Deep thoughts at the airport

Honestly, there are, like, 500 empty seats around here, and the family with the whiney little kid, the hypochondriac mother googling and fretting aloud about viral encephalitis risks, and the father whose casually draped arm over our shared back rest is invading my personal space, have to sit right behind me. I'm like a magnet.

And the wi-fi is shitty.

It's definitely time for sushi.

Still at the airport

True story, as I write...

Yell "Daddy" again, little kid. I dare you.

At the airport

Sometimes one finds oneself at the airport for a while. Sometimes one would like to do a little airport shopping, but the airport shopping options are a bit, how you say, not for one.

Would it kill the airport to have one thrift shop for one?

Obsessions - Batman, a tribute to Adam West

I'm on the road and just heard the sad news, that Adam West died earlier today. I'm always prepared for an impromptu comic, and so a tribute to my favourite Batman was necessary.

Exit strategy

I recently heard retiring New Yorker cartoon editor, Bob Mankoff, on the CBC radio show, Q, and then I read his book, "How About Never - Is Never Good For You?" and was inspired. I thought, hey, I can do that. I can do New Yorker style cartoons and join the ranks of my heroes and make a decent living, living my dream.

Then I went to bed and literally dreamed I did just that. I dreamed up a bunch of cartoons and they were crazy and brilliant and fantastic.

Until I woke up. Then, they were largely forgotten, or quite stupid.

I will keep dreaming.

No Internet

Based on a true-ish story. The household Internet was on the fritz, so I contemplated living a simpler, old fashioned way of life. It was a kind of sour grapes, though - like, I don't need you, Internet. I can live without you, Internet. Fuck you, Internet!

We had the Internet fixed before I procured any actual livestock though.
